Managing Your Blogging Time When Family and Friends Don’t Understand

In the DailyBlogTips survey, one reader wrote, “It is difficult to deal with friends and family and to make them understand that I have working hours even though I work from home.”
Is this a problem you have too?
It’s one that a lot of bloggers face, especially in the early stages of their blogging career.
If you don’t tackle this, it can be enough to stop you blogging altogether.

Not Everyone Will “Get” It

Some people in your life simply won’t understand why you want to blog – at least, not straight away.
They might not see it as a legitimate way to build and run your own business.
They might think that regular employment is better or easier.
They might even be a bit envious of your ambition and dedication.
Even when people have a vague understanding, they might not realise how much time you’ll need to invest in building a successful blog. Perhaps they think your blog is just an online diary where you write about your day – not the foundation of a business.
So one of the best things you can do is…

Treat Your Blog as a Business

If you don’t take your blogging seriously, you can’t expect other people to. Ideally, you should:
  • Stick to your working hours. If you say you’re going to be busy blogging from 9am til 12 noon, work! Don’t stop at 9.30am and watch daytime TV.
  • Be business-like. For instance, if you intend to make money from your blog, have a clear plan about how you’re going to do that.
  • Track important metrics, such as cashflow. Once your blog starts making money, track how much you’re getting month after month. You can show this to family and friends to explain how your blog is growing.
When the people around you see that blogging is more than a passing whim, they’ll be much more likely to take it seriously.

Quick Fixes

If you’re really struggling to get people to respect your time, try these:
  • Get out of the house to blog. Your spouse / roomie / mom can’t bother you if you’re in a coffee shop writing.
  • Go in a different room. If you can’t escape the house, at least find a quiet corner – perhaps working in your bedroom rather than in the living room.
  • Wear headphones. People are much less likely to interrupt for a chat if you’ve got headphones on. (You can even crank the music up so loud that you can’t hear them if they do!)
  • Work in short bursts. You don’t need to blog all evening, every evening. How about working on a post from 6pm – 7pm then having dinner and watching a bit of TV with your partner, before doing another quick burst of work from 9pm – 9.30pm?

5 Things To Remember When Creating Your Own Site

If you want to maximize your reach to customers and readers, you have to have your own website. However, it is no longer just enough to put up a website and hope that users will come. You need to have some direction and put in the effort to make a user experience that will keep visitors coming back. Below are five things to remember when creating your own website or blog.

Provide Meaningful Content

It doesn't matter how cool your site looks, if the content is not useful to your visitors, they will not come back. You want content that provides meaning and helpful information to your visitors. For bloggers you want to write articles that are useful to your users and can provide helpful solutions. Businesses should provide content that will help your customers make a decision on a product or provide information on what services your business provides.

Upgrade the Look of Your Wordpress Site With Themes

change wordpress theme One huge mistake that new websites owners make when setting up their site with Wordpress is sticking with the default theme. Themes are website templates that control the layout of your site. There are literally millions of themes available on the internet for free and it is simple to change out to a new theme. Login to your dashboard and go to appearance, and then themes. From there you can search for a theme that suits your needs. From there click install and then activate and refresh your main website. Your new theme is now active and each page in your site will use the same template.

Use SEO to Drive More Traffic

seo to drive traffic
If you want to drive traffic to your website, then you need to spend some time with Search Engine Optimization. Not paying attention to SEO will result in your site not moving up in Google or other search engines and users will have a harder time finding your blog. One handy solution is to install Scribe, Copyblogger Media's solution for SEO. It will analyze your content and give you tips how to improve traffic to your site.

Make it Mobile

It doesn't matter whether you are setting up a website for your business or hosting a simple blog, your site will need to be compatible for mobile devices. Many webmasters report that as much as 30 percent of their web traffic is driven from mobile devices.
responsive design for mobile If you are using Wordpress for your site, you can install the WP touch plugin that will automatically create a mobile version of your site. If you are using Blogger, go to Template, click on the settings cog under the “Mobile” preview, and select "Yes. Show mobile template on mobile devices".
For those not using Wordpress or Blogger, your two best options will be creating a separate mobile site for your website or using a responsive design. A responsive design for your website allows the site to rearrange itself to fit most mobile devices.
There are actually a lot of Wordpress video tutorials on Youtube with detailed views on how to create a mobile friendly website or also known as 'Responsive Web Design'. You can go check those one out.

Use Social Media

social media
One of the best ways to get your site more exposure and to drive traffic to your site is through the use of social media. Sites such as Digg, Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter will all help to give your site greater exposure. Wordpress users can install a plugin for various social media sites that will allow you to add a social media functionality. Go to dashboard, and under plugins search for the social media plugin you need for your site.

How to Use Word to Write and Post to Your Blog

Use Word to Write and Post to Your Blog

Word 2010 includes a feature that lets you post to a blog directly from Word's editing screen.
Here's how it works.
  1. From Word's File menu, choose New, then select Blog Post from the gallery of document types.
  2. Word opens a document with a placeholder title, a horizontal line, and an empty space for typing your blog post.
  3. Type in a title and a posting, and click Publish on the Blog Post tab of the Ruler.
  4. The first time you post, a wizard will walk you through the process of entering your blog's URL, your username, and your password. Click OK and your posting appears on your blog.
  5. The Ribbon also includes a Manage Accounts button that lets you revise or add to your list of hosting sites.
Microsoft seems to have lost interest in this feature, because it no longer works reliably with some services, such as Blogger, and continues to list Windows Live Spaces as a provider though Windows Live Spaces no longer exists. But the blog post feature is smooth as silk with other services, such as WordPress. (Here's a funny coincidence: Blogger is owned by Google; WordPress partners with Microsoft.)
Microsoft wants you to use its free Windows Live Writer instead of Word, but I prefer not to clutter my disk with multiple programs when a single one gets the job done.

Best Places to Submit Your Blog

Gaining traffic to your blog is not only important for your blog but for you too.  Some of the basics of SEO (search engine optimization) steps are adding keyword and phrases that are good and friendly titles, along with appropriate URL structure and descriptions. Listing a blog on blog directories is one of the main steps of link building.

Blog Catalog
Blog Catalog offers a large directory of categories from education, business, social activism, humor, SEO, fashion, movies, design, photography, blogging, software, health, music, marketing,  sports, news, media, food, arts, travel, family, politics, tech and more.  The site allows you to search by user, language or country.

Blog Search Engine
Blog Search Engine is a part of the Performancing SplashPressMedia  company. This search engine has a big selection of categories available to choose from including advertising, blog news, business, charity, car, education, diet and exercise, DIY, books and literature, environment, health, inspirational, job and career, lifehacking,  writing, relationshops, news and more.

Bloggeries – Blog Resource
This is an easy directory to place your blog links. Bloggeries are known to have the best categories available.  Some of the topics available are business, computes, education, finance, foreign, health, humor, podcasting, shopping, writing, sports,  vlogs, resources, and more.

OnTopList.com is a free blog directory where you can submit the RSS feeds of your blogs to their directory.  OnTopList.com can also setup your own blog ranking or also known as a micro-directory and basically put together a list of all of your favorites blogs you visit in one location. OnTopList is also a social networking site that allows you to communicate and socialize with other bloggers. The social network also allows you to promote your blogs which will allow you to attract additional more readers.

Infographics: The Answer to the Lazy Blogger’s Prayers?

Infographics are huge. They’re popping up on blogs, they float by in your Facebook stream, and a quick search through Google News this morning showed no less than 15 articles that Google deemed newsworthy, all with the word “Infographic” in the title, all published within the last 24 hours. But, in their quest for the next piece of viral content, are bloggers really just shooting themselves in the foot?
There’s no question that infographics grab the readers’ attention. At first glance anyone would rather look at a colorful picture than read a page filled with text. But not all infographics are created equal and a flashy design does not an infographic make. Most of the infographics I’ve seen lately simply beg the question:
Does this lazy blogger really think I’m stupid enough to buy this crap?
When you write a fact-based article or blog post you back it up with research, you link out to relevant sources so your readers can see how you came to your conclusions. Apparently, when you’re creating infographics, anything goes.
An infographic that came across my Facebook stream this morning blasted: Facebook Posting Rule – The Trifecta For Retailers. No relevant sources were quoted, no statistics, and no experts. Yet, according to this infographic there are new rules for posting on Facebook. I should post 10% promotional content, 20% shared content, and 70% of my content should be something that builds brand recognition.
This blogger is suggesting I throw the 80/20 Rule out the window, even though it’s been the rule of thumb for every successful business on the planet since the dawn of time, simply because they put together a nice, pretty infographic. He’s also suggesting that his method is better than mine, but you don’t see me needing to spend a pile of money on an infographic to get my message across, do you?
What’s worse though is the fact that he’s telling me what to do but he’s not backing it up with why I should do it. So either this blogger is very lazy and doesn’t want to do the research so he’s going to bury that fact under a pretty picture, or he thinks I’m really stupid and wouldn’t understand. Either way, I hope he’s not counting on me to be one of the people who helps his infographic go viral.
My Point is This: Bravo for those bloggers who have the time and money to invest in infographics. But you’re doing it wrong and you’re actually hurting your blog and your reputation. Your infographics, while pretty and eye-catching, are breaking all
the rules of blogging.
To illustrate my point, I went to Visual.ly and found an infographic that takes a sarcastic look at “10 Ways to Make Your Infographic Totally Awesome”, designed by a user named Neomam. Open it up in a new window so you can follow along if you like. It’s really a great infographic.
More is Less: The rule of thumb in blogging has always been to choose one keyword and answer one question with your blog posts or articles. It makes it easier for the reader to quickly scan and absorb your content and it’s better for SEO. Yet most infographics I’ve seen lately have so much information packed in that it’s impossible to fully explain anything. Your readers are only getting part of the story.
Use as Many Fonts as Possible: Using multiple mixed and colorful fonts, tilted at angles or inside bubbles just makes your graphic that much more difficult to read and understand. You don’t do this in your blog posts. Why would you think it would work in your graphic?
Tell, Don’t Show: What’s wrong? Can’t find a picture to illustrate your point? Exactly! There are times when text is the best way to convey your message.
Copy and Paste: If all you’re going to do with your graphic is paste some old style bar charts from Word then why other? Use it as an image to break up your informative blog post.
Copyright is for Losers: Again, this is a rule everyone is breaking with their infographics. You don’t use copyrighted images on your blog because you know, you’ll get caught and you’ll risk having Google take your blog down. So why is it OK to use stolen images in your infographic? It doesn’t make sense. You created it because you’re trying to create viral content. Viral means a lot of people will see it.
No Need to Check Facts: And here we go. The biggest mistake I’m seeing, but I’ve already talked about this up above. This is where bloggers are shooting themselves in the foot. That pretty infographic is going to draw more attention to your weak, thready content. Infographics are not a solution for lazy bloggers. Your readers are not stupid and the fact that you think they are, is insulting and only shows how little you know about your audience.
You can Stretch the Truth: Creating an infographic takes a bit of artistic talent, but it doesn’t give you an artistic license to fudge the facts to make your infographic look more impressive.
Style Over Substance: Take a look at that infographic you just created. If you were to take all of the real, solid, information off of it and paste it into a blog post, would you publish it on your blog? I rest my case.
Don’t Bother Proofreading: Again, if you wouldn’t publish it on your blog, why are you putting it in a graphic that you hope will attract even more attention than your blog posts? Are you assuming your readers are too stupid to notice.

Originality is Overrated:
Your infographic is content, just like your videos, your articles and blog posts. As such, it still needs to be original and unique and you still need to credit sources.
Personally, I like the idea of using infographics – sparingly. But lately, I’m just seeing a long page of disconnected pictures pasted into a file with no relative, informative content attached.
A successful infographic should be:
* Focused on one keyword or issue – just like your blog posts
* Fully researched – just like your blog posts
* Fact-based with statistics and resources – just like your blog posts
* Easy to read and absorb – just like your blog posts
* Brief and to-the-point – just like your blog posts
Most infographics I’ve seen look really pretty – on the surface. But if you’re not getting the results you expected then the problem is most likely your content.
These graphics aren’t meant to be used in place of good blogging practices on those days you’re too lazy to dig in and do the work. When done properly, an infographic should actually take more time and effort than a written blog post because you’re not only compiling the information, you’re also creating the graphic.
When you put the time and effort into creating that great infographic you’ll get the results you’re looking for, just like you do when you put the time and effort into an awesome blog post. But if you don’t you’re just wasting your time and money, and shooting yourself in the foot.

3 Steps How to Set Up a Popular and Successful Blog

There are hundreds of different formulas or paths to achieve a successful blog, but most pathways will have some basic concepts that will always remain the same. I am so sure you must have read most of it on many blogs (the most often repeated one – Original and well written content) , which is quite a necessary factor , but not the only factor. To keep it easy I have broken it down to three simple steps. This post is made for basically word press based blogs but can be applied to other websites as well.

Get Traffic and make your blog Popular

In my 10+ years of blogging, I have realised that these three factors that make up the basic recipe of any successful blog is just 3 factors as given below

    Content ( Regularly Posted Content)
    SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
Design (Look and structure of the blog)

Good Content is necessary mainly to build up a regular audience that comes back to your blog repeatedly and also get your posts linked, leading to AUTO SEO for your blog. An yeah don’t forget that Google also likes good content except once in a while when their evil pandas and penguins do stuff that they are not supposed to do. People also bookmark good content which make them comeback at some part of time to your blog.

SEO is needed like every good product that needs advertising to get it noticed. Unless you seo optimize you blog, it’s unlikely that you will be found on the vast internet where millions of blogs are vying every day for every person’s attention. This is made easy by word press SEO plugins that make the job easy for you.

Design is a concept that pretty much needs no explanation. If you seen any makeover show on TV , you can get what I am trying to say , you make something look good ( like a blog – not a ugly chick) and people will come back and it will also register on their mind. Design includes the colours of your blog, structure of your blog and also the overall look of your blog. If you notice most successful blogs have a light colour (or white colour) theme.

So now that you got a good idea of why these 3 steps need to be implemented on your blog or website, I will show you how to do it the easy way and the hard way.

Content

Content can be the hardest part of these three steps to get your blog popular, just because it’s the most time consuming of these 3 steps. To make this part easier its always recommended to have a blog topic or niche that you are passionate about and like to write about. I Have never SEO researched my topics to post before blogging and I still get decent traffic for my niche, because the content is good. Get windows live writer for blogging and save content that interests you in your niche on windows live writer and finish and post it when you get time. One way to keep the regular flow of your blog posts going is to at least write four articles for your blog and keep ready to post ( which takes care of at least 4 posts for a month) and then in between when you get time and find articles that interest you and you want to blog about just add them as bonus posts to your blog in-between your this 4 posts. YOU can vary these numbers of posts to suit yourself depending how frequently you want to update your blog. This was the hard way, some easy but not as effective Ways are given below for the people who are always short on time or are just part time bloggers like me.

The easy way to get content for your blog

Get content for you blog from other people, this can be done in two ways PAID and Free

FREE content – The easy Way to get free content is to get people to do guest posts for your blog on you blog niche topic (to keep it relevant). This becomes easier the when your blog has got a higher Google rank as people will want to feed of your high Google ranking.

Nowadays you will also get many paid offers from SEO companies ( with provided content and link ) to post on your blog for a fee, which is happening even more after the GOOGLE PANDA & PENGUIN update. These sort of offers are good because they content provided is free and you get paid as well.

Hard way and Paid way to get content for your blog

PAID for CONTENT, for blog – This method involves a bit of work, mainly trial and error until you get the right person, with the use of content writing services that can be offered for a fee to you on freelance sites. You can get an article written for as low as $5 an article, but also finding a person who can write it for $5 without grammatical errors and good content is a bit of a hit and miss until you find that correct person. I Myself do article writing , so I know the time it can take to write a well written article , so if someone can do that for $5 and come up with good well written content then it’s cheap.

Some of the websites where you can source article writers for blogs are

Freelancer.com
Odesk.com
Fiverr.com
There are plenty more websites (vworker.com , guru.com, elance.com) which provide these services but I myself have not done any business with these sites so far .People can charge you from $1 an article to $25 an article on these websites, but you can get either well written article or a bad grammar article for somewhere between $2 to $10 an article. If your blog is making a decent amount of income this strategy is well worth considering to free up your time to focus on SEO and other aspects of the blog that needs some tweaking and attention.

When you compare all the three aspects mentioned, I believe content is one of the most important aspects of a blog, because good well written content will make people come back to your blog and also is the reason for you getting more natural links to your blog and therefore getting more traffic. Beginner Bloggers often overlook the importance of this factor and later on there is a lot of reverse work to be done to fix this.

SEO

SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. When a website or blog is search engine optimized it is using tools and methods to rank higher within search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo. The easy way to get SEO for your blog is to get a theme which is seo enabled or then has a specific SEO function added in. SEO in a theme will only help you a little bit now days, as the definition of SEO today is rapidly changing, no thanks to Google’s regular updates on SEO. The other factor that is increasingly being taken in as measure of your seo value is you popularity on new popular social websites like Facebook, twitter and Goggle+.

One good strategy for improving you SEO and Traffic rapidly is to focus your energies on one thing – get links from authority sites. A website that is highly ranked in search engines results in more traffic to your website

A good way to be up-to-date with SEO for your blog is to read what’s going on in the SEO area, by reading reputed SEO blogs like SEOMOZ.com/blog, SEOJOURNAL, DAILYBLOG TIPS and also Google and BING webmaster tools blogs. If you got a Google account, a Google webmaster tools account or a Bing Webmaster tools account will also help keep you in good stead and help you keep a watch on your site to check if everything is proper and functioning as it should.
Design

Design is not only a feel good, look good factor but also helps bring in more people back to your blog, even more if the content is good as well. Who doesn’t like to be associated with a good looking person?, the same goes for a blog to a small extent. When a website looks professional and neat more clients and Viewers will be attracted to it. SEO needs a nice looking website design in order for them to both work more effectively. If a website does not appear clean and friendly customers and clients will be put off by it

One of the other important factors for good design that is often overlooked is easy navigation and structure. Your blog visitors should not get frustrated trying to find things on your blogs. A well laid out top navigation bar with appropriate sub- links under appropriate headings, a search button for your blog and Social buttons placed in optimised positions will improve the likeability of your blog as well, due to a better user experience.

Contrary to some beliefs, your blogs design could actually be responsible for your lack of traffic. Design for a blog is getting cheaper by the day thanks to heaps of new freelance sites as mentioned above. Due to these cheaper prices, Websites that provide themes have also started reducing their prices to make it more affordable an affordable word press theme.

Good design isn’t only about the aesthetics of the blog. It also affects how your website looks on all the different web browsers that people use to browse websites. The only safe way to make sure your website does well in all browsers is making your site compatible with all of them. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera – your website should be tested against each of them or at least at a minimum the most popular of browsers and how they look and render on them.

“No matter how great your blog looks, if it’s hard for your viewer to navigate your blog and find what they want, you’ve defeated your own purpose. Great design is a good marriage of form and function and usability.”

To conclude I can say there is no magic fix that your blog will become popular overnight, there are a just a few things you should get educated or get some focus on for a successful blog “I suggest learning about blogging, especially content marketing, then perhaps social media, how search engines work, and copywriting, for starters.

Website Secrets that Will Generate Revenue for Your Business

Every minute of the day, people are searching online for answers. If they need a new car, it is more than likely that they will first research it online before ever visiting a dealership. If they are looking for a restaurant in a particular area, chances are that they will “Google it” to find it. The internet serves as the perfect matchmaker between businesses and potential customers.

Once a potential customer has stumbled across your company’s website, you have about two seconds to capture their attention. If you haven’t captured their attention within those first couple of seconds, they simply click off of your website and onto the next one down the list. That is why it is crucial to have your website set up for optimal conversion. If your website doesn’t have these 15 elements, then it’s probably not bringing you business. Here are the 15 must haves and must not haves of an effective website:

1. A Bold Headline at the Top of Every Page
The headline should be short and it MUST depict what benefit the customer will get by reading further on. People today are busy and the internet includes millions of other websites that people can move onto if your site does not capture their attention immediately. Too many companies make the mistake of marketing about themselves rather than about the consumer. This is called “Ego Marketing.” To be effective, the headline message must always be about how your company can help the consumer or what you can offer to them.

2. “TMI” (Too Much Information)

No more than 2 paragraphs on a page. In this busy era, people don’t have the attention span to read any more than that. Plus, if you give them too much information, then they have no reason to contact you. The whole idea is to get the website visitor to call, stop in or contact you in some way, right?

3. Have a Call to Action on Every Page
… but have no more than two calls to action per page. Studies have shown that if you give people too many choices then it overwhelms them and that is when they will take no action at all. That’s the point where they will usually say “I have to think about it.” So put a clear call to action on every page and actually tell the website visitor what to do next on each page. Examples- “Click here now” or ” Call 1-800-555-5555 for more information.”

4. Have a User Friendly Navigational Bar
A prominently placed menu bar makes each page of your website easy to use. Keep it simple.

5. A Picture
A picture can easily replace a thousand words. A picture that depicts what the page or product/service is about can capture their attention much more effectively than paragraphs of text which will only send visitors clicking away.

6. Consistent Branding
It is important to have a consistent look and style throughout all of a company’s marketing pieces. This instills a reputable image of your company to the consumer. Avoid having a different style on your website than what you have on your other marketing pieces.

7. Name and Contact Info of the Company on Every Page of the Website
It seems simple, but if you search around, you would be surprised at how may companies overlook the basics.

8. Limit Color to No More than 3 Complementary Colors
More than that is too busy to the eye. It will distract the visitor’s attention away from what you want them to be focusing on.

9. White Space
White space is a breath of fresh air for the eyes. If a person can look at the web page for two seconds, and then look away and be able to tell you what the main subject was of the page, then you’ve got a winner. If not, then go back and eliminate items until the two second rule applies.

10. No Auto Load Music or Video
A sudden burst of noise when a visitor clicks onto your website typically will cause users to click right back off of the page. Let the website visitor click on the video or sound file to play it when they are ready to.

11. An Email Sign Up Form
… on at least one page of your website will provide leads that can be followed and nurtured for months. Even if the website visitor is not ready to make a purchase that day, they may be ready a couple of months later after they have received regular emails from your company.

12. An Interactive Link to Contact Your Company
Whether it be an email link or a form box, make it easy for the website visitor to contact your company with just a click of the mouse. An interactive, simple to use website produces more leads than a site that makes the visitor work for it.

13. An Interactive Map to the Company Location With Directions
With Mapquest and Google maps, this has become the common way for people to get directions. It can be added to a website in just a couple of clicks and it gives the visitor an easy way to find you.

14. Company Business Hours
Surprisingly this is quite often forgotten. It is also smart to add the time zone… remember, this is the world wide web. Visitors to your site are not necessarily in your same time zone.

15. Keep It Relevant
It’s nice to add a personal touch to your website, but remember, people who are looking for a company to do business with, may not have the same personal, religious or political beliefs as you do. So be certain to only include information relevant to the business. Don’t include personal pages on religion, politics or other non-relevant information. No one wants to lose a potential customer due to opposing personal beliefs. Remember, business is business. Leave your personal life at home.
Every year, statistics keep rising on the percentage of consumers that first search online in order to find information on new products or services. In 2011, it was upwards of 85% depending on the type of industry being searched. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to capture that potential business. Follow these 15 tips and then analyze the response that you get. If at first you
don’t succeed, tweak it until you start getting results.

10 WordPress Plugins That Save Bloggers Time

1. WordPress.com Stats
Personally, I feel it is essential for bloggers to track the activity on their blogs. You can make use of a web analytics tool, but it takes sometime to navigate through all the reports. That is where a plugin will be handy. The WordPress.com Stats plugin is a big help in this regard. Instead of using another application, you can keep track of your blog’s stats directly from your WordPress dashboard.

 2. WP-Polls
It is a well-known fact that people like to participate in polls. There are options available to you on the internet, but the WP-Polls plugin will allow you to create custom polls on your WordPress dashboard. You do not have to leave your account to log into another site to manage it. This is only if you want to make use of polls.

3. Sociable
This plugin automatically add links to your favorite social bookmarking sites on your posts, pages and in your RSS feed. You can choose from 99 different social bookmarking sites.

4. Akismet
It is very important to activate your Akismet plugin on your blog. It is a fact that blogs unfortunately get comments that are spam. This plugin checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not and lets you review the spam it catches under your blog’s “comments” admin screen. Your readers do not like to see spam comments. This can easily result in a decrease of your traffic. I cannot stress this enough, please make sure you are using a plugin like Akismet. This WordPress plugin will save you time.

5. Math Comment Spam
In the fast growing era of technology, it is unfortunately a fact that comment spam blocking plugins like Akismet will not always be enough to eliminate all spam comments. By using the Math Comment Spam plugin in conjunction with the Akismet plugin, you will be able to decrease spam comments. The Math Comment Spam plugin will ask readers a simple math problem such as 2 x 3 before they can comment. This is to make sure that it is a human comment.

6. Theme Tester

Editor’s Note:
The Theme Tester plugin may not work with newer versions of WordPress. A good alternate plugin is Theme Test Drive which can be found at: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/theme-test-drive/
It sometimes happens that bloggers want to change the WordPress theme. You do not want your audience to see the changes until all is finished and ready. This is where the Theme Tester plugin is of great help. Your readers will see your existing design until all is set up and ready for publishing.

7. WP-Database Backup
I want you to read the following with attention! If your blog is important to you, do yourself a big favor and install the WP-Database Backup plugin. It is most crucial to have this plugin installed and set to back up your WordPress database. This plugin will save the data on your hard drive or it will be sent to you via email. The next important point I want to stress is the following: Please keep in mind that this plugin makes a backup of your database files only. Make sure to make a manual backup of your WordPress content folder from your hosting account.

8. Easytube
This plugin will help you to get a YouTube or Google video published on your blog. It easily makes embedding YouTube and Google videos into your post a snap. Easytube also includes a preview image of your YouTube videos in the RSS feed with a link to the video. If you want to make use of visual media, it is essential to install this plugin.

9. Auto Close Comments, Pingbacks and Trackbacks
To reduce spam on older posts, you can make use of this plugin. Older posts are targets for automated comment spam bots. After installing the plugin, set the timeframe to a date when you want to close comments on your posts.

10. Google Maps Plugin
Editor’s Note: The Google Maps plugin may not work with newer versions of WordPress. A good alternate plugin is the Comprehensive Google Map plugin which can be found at: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/comprehensive-google-map-plugin/
This plugin speaks for itself. If you want to make use of maps from Google to be part of your blog post, this plugin will assist you in the process of creating, inserting and customizing it. This WordPress plugin will definitely save you time.
I really hope these 10 WordPress plugins will save you time and make blogging a treat. Make use of them and enjoy your blogging!

7 Writing Tips for Beginners

This article offers you 7 article marketing tips that are especially helpful for beginners, and you can take any combination of these tips and use them to create your own writing strategy.

1 – Don’t Try to Write an Article in One Sitting

Writing takes time, and there are different stages to it. In the first stage you’ll be jotting down ideas you want to include in your article. In the next stage, you start to write in complete sentences and paragraphs. The next step is the editing stage, and after that is the proofreading stage. Writing takes such mental effort that it would be very hard for you to do all of these stages in one day. Most experienced writers will spread their work out over several days. That way they can approach their article with a fresh mind several times, which produces a higher quality article.

2 – Write Early in the Morning

It’s an interesting fact that many serious writers prefer to work in the early morning hours when their minds are most alert (after a cup of coffee!) and when their working conditions are the most quiet. You may also find that it is easiest to write first thing in the morning, but it never hurts to experiment!

3 – Create a Mini-Ritual That You do Before You Write

This is a little trick that many professional writers use. Come up with some simple activities that you always do prior to sitting down to write. These activities could be as simple as having a cup of coffee while reading the newspaper (that works particularly well if you’re writing first thing in the morning). The mini-ritual helps your mind transition to the task of writing.

4 – Write in a Distraction Free Location
It’s just common sense that it’s easiest to write when you have the fewest distractions. Distractions can come from people, technology (such as email, phone, or the internet), environmental noise, or maybe even something as innocent as a window with a beautiful view.

5 – Prepare Your Topic and Research the Day Before

The hardest part of writing an article is coming up with the topic. When you’re writing articles for article marketing, your topic will always have something to do with the general topic of your website. Still, that leaves a lot of options. That’s why it’s best for you to sit down the day before and pinpoint what topic you’ll write about. Then, when the time comes for your writing session, you can just sit down and start writing.
The same goes for doing research – if you do need to look anything up or gather any information, do it the day before so you don’t get sidetracked during your writing session. Your writing session is just for writing.

6 – Write for a Limited Amount of Time
It’s easy to procrastinate when you know you have some articles to write. Setting a time limit on your writing session can help eliminate some anxiety (you know that there is an end in sight!). It may also help you write more efficiently, as oftentimes setting a time limit can help you focus and motivate you to think and write more quickly.

7 – Make It a Habit to Write with a More Structured Approach, Using These Tips as Your Guide
One of the most positive habits that a beginner can adopt is to have a structured writing routine. You’ll find that it’s easier for you to get started writing and that you don’t overtax your mind trying to do too much at one time.
These are simple tips that any beginner can use to emulate writers who have more experience. By using these tips, you will write more efficiently and improve in your writing skill.

Tips for Discovering New Article Ideas

A consistent marketing strategy of writing and submitting articles can result in a boost to your reputation and business online. But coming up with fresh, relevant subject matter is not always easy. Fortunately there are easy ways for you to discover new ideas for your marketing campaign content.

1. Blogs
Visit popular blogs that touch on your niche. Read the content and comments and see what people are saying. What questions are people asking about the content already supplied? Can you expand on what is there or write more in-depth articles on the subject? Is anyone asking for information on a certain subject that is not available? These are all things to look for when contemplating your next article idea.

2. Message Boards
With the social site explosion, message boards may not be as popular as they once were but they can still be a good place to find content ideas. Visit each category and see what people are talking about. Ask questions yourself to get more of an idea of what people are looking for. For example: If your niche is gardening, you could ask the board members what type of information is hardest to find on gardening. Get an idea of what people need and have a hard time finding.

3. Social Sites
These days social sites are where most of the action is so follow the trends. Look for voids that a good article could fill. Become involved with social groups and discussions. This will not only help you with your content marketing but with your business as well.

4. Internet News Sites
Keeping up with internet news sites is important for your business, not only for writing articles but for keeping abreast of new developments, ideas, and technology in your field. Research and write your articles to keep your readers and visitors informed as well.

5. Focus on Your Email
Carefully read all email inquiries you get. What are people asking you about your business? Keep records of all the questions asked and use them for your content marketing.

6. Article Directories
By reading other articles, maybe you can come up with an unusual twist or angle for an overused idea. It sometimes helps to get different views and insights on the same old subject. NOTE: Never copy information or content from other sites, blogs or articles.

7. Subscribe to Ezines
Ezines can be a goldmine of information, ideas and more. You can keep up-to-date on the latest products, programs, biz opps, etc. Some of this information can be used to create an informative article.

8. Do a Survey
Ask your visitors, readers, and customers to answer a couple of questions. Offer them a free gift in return.
For example: What questions do you have about…? What resources do you need and cannot find? What is your number one concern about….? Of course, these questions would target your specific niche so you can zero in on what people are looking for.

9. Ask Yourself
Ask yourself what information you would be looking for. When you look for articles to read, what subjects do you search for? As a reader yourself, you can answer your own questions.

10. Open Mind
Always keep an open mind when it comes to subject matter for your content. I always used to tell myself, people won’t want to know about that or how to do this. Don’t fall into that trap! People want to learn about everything. We are always looking for new information, tips, ideas and resources.

Always carry a small notepad so anytime anything inspires an idea within you, you can write it down and use it when the time comes. Many people get ideas in the shower or lying in bed at night. These are not the best times so have a pad and pen handy!
And remember, people want basic, straightforward helpful information. You don’t need to use big words, fancy storylines or over dramatization. Just be honest and helpful.
Also, be sure to give your articles a little of your personality, humor (if appropriate) and heart.

Write as if you were just chatting with an old friend.
Articles can be one of the most powerful online marketing methods so don’t let a little doubt stop you from making this big step towards success!

Your Free Lunch

Everybody says that there’s no such thing as a free lunch. While this principle may hold water in the real world, online this internet is anything but true. Let’s face it, the Internet is awash with low and no cost advertising solutions. Everything from blogging to social networking is 100% free. There are even free online TV Stations like YouTube that provide instant programming to a worldwide audience. So let me count the ways in which every business from startups to well-established firms can jump on the free advertising bandwagon online.

1. Free Websites – Simply Google “Free Websites” and you will encounter 1,920,000 results that include everything from free website templates to free hosting. While you can’t expect these websites to give you the kind of full court press SEO advantages of one that is professionally built, they can get even the smallest of businesses into the game. Plus, they can help take an established business to the next level online by providing landing page opportunities galore. Speaking of Google, the 800 lb gorilla in the room recently jumped into the website development business by launching their “Get Your Business Online” program, which covers domain registration, hosting and a tutorial designed to help neophytes design their own website. The first year is free, followed by a fee of $2 per month for the name and $4.99 per month for the hosting, starting the second year.

2. Blogging
– Life is the ultimate reality show. As anyone who has ever watched HGTV knows, people love to watch other people work. It doesn’t take Hollywood to turn your business into must-see-online-tv. In fact it doesn’t take video at all (although it helps). The easiest way to generate an audience online is to document the drama that every business person goes through on a daily basis. The simplest way to accomplish this is via blog. With free blogging platforms such as blogger.com and wordpress.com being both available and time tested, creating your business’ online diary couldn’t be easier.
3. How Social is Your Social Networking? While social networks can be used to generate an audience and augment the bottom line, there is a right way and a wrong way to go about doing so. The best approach is to create an environment in which compelling stories, humorous insights and helpful hints about your business are produced and promoted online. The key is that unlike ad copy which is 90% pitch and 10% information, when it comes to social networking, this equation is turned on its head. In fact, the best way to turn a reader into a customer when using social networking is to show them that you are an authority who can save them time or make a problem disappear. Interacting with an ever growing audience is what social networking is all about. This is also a great place to link your blog and add photos and short videos of projects, before and afters and testimonial videos of happy customers.

4. Do You YouTube? While many businesses have a video or two on YouTube, the businesses that learn to feed this combination video portal/search engine/social network on a weekly or monthly basis are the businesses that generate most of the action. When it comes to breaking out of the box, online video can be your elevator to the top if employed properly. As with social networking, no one wants to watch a 60-second commercial online. What people want to see is what I refer to as “infotainment.” If you can entertain and inform your audience you will get your message across and have the opportunity build a vast audience who wait with baited breath for your next installment. Plus, since Google owns YouTube, by optimizing your videos, it is sometimes possible to jump onto page 1 or 2 of the world’s most popular search engine with video alone.

5. Craigslist - While this free advertising portal isn’t a be-all end-all for every business, any place you can plug in product and service offers, run free classified ads and in short milk this online cow for everything she’s worth, you should. I personally know a number of local retailers, etailers and auto dealers who think that Craigslist is the best thing since sliced bread. The trick of being a power user on this portal is to know how to phrase an ad and under which categories to post. The best advice I can give is to see what other power players are doing and emulate them.

While there are literally thousands of other free directories, portals and search engines out there onto which to hitch your online wagon, remember that in order for the web to work, you need to work the web. This means that if you want the Internet to feed your business, you need to feed a steady diet of content to the web. So the next time that someone tells you that, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch” show them this article and ask them if they want fries with that.

16 Ways to Build a List of Money From Scratch

You’ve started a new business or you have an existing one that you would like to be selling products to regularly. Either way, let’s suppose you have no customer list, no group of interested people who have asked you to stay in touch. According to most marketing experts, you’ll be struggling to sell much of anything until you build a list and begin contacting that list regularly with information and offers.
Where to start? Make sure your web site has a prominent signup box on every page. Then use at least six or seven of these 16 methods to build that crucial list.

1. Bait Piece. Create a free item that will tempt your ideal client to click to your site and request it. Whether that’s an audio, a written report, a video or something else, within the item make sure there’s a brief description of what you do and what you sell. People need to provide their email address and join your list to receive the giveaway item.

2. Online Article Distribution. Write useful, informative articles that are 400-600 words long and that have titles using keywords that the kind of people you want to sell to are looking for. End the article with a biographical paragraph that describes who you are and offers your free item. Post these articles at article distribution sites, many of which cost nothing to use.

3. Squeeze Page and Pay-Per-Click. Post a web page describing your giveaway item and inviting people to opt into receive it. What makes this a “squeeze page” is that it contains no general information about your business and no links to other pages for your business. Then send traffic there using pay-per-click ads.

4. Press Releases. Write press releases about the launch of your business, the availability of your giveaway item, useful tips and tie-ins with trends or breaking news. Distribute these through press release distribution services and email them to your local media as well as specialty magazines related to your industry. Getting coverage in newspapers, magazines and online news sites brings traffic to your site and should increase the size of your list.

5. Guest Blog Posts. Contact bloggers in your subject area, offering to write a blog post on a controversy or a set of useful guidelines. You’ll get a valuable link back to your site with each post along with coming to the attention of the bloggers’ established audiences.

6. Online Videos. Create one or more funny, opinionated or practical short videos, up to three minutes long, and post them at YouTube and elsewhere. At the end of the video, show your URL on screen. Be sure to tell friends and colleagues about the video, too, to get word-of-mouth publicity going.

7. Survey. Ask members of your target market for their opinions or experiences, using an online poll or a paper-and-pen survey sheet where you have a large group in one room. Tabulate and publicize the results with a press release and by contacting bloggers about the survey results. This positions you as someone who is contributing to your industry, in addition to generating curiosity that will get prospects checking you out online.

8. Free Teleclass. Announce a free teleclass on a popular topic using the other methods in this list. Let everyone know that when they sign up for the teleclass, they’ll also be added to your list (but can unsubscribe at any time). This is especially good for someone trying to grow a reputation as an expert. A teleclass also enables people to get to know and trust you in a way other methods don’t.

9. Online Forums and Discussion Groups. Find gathering places where people interested in your topic area communicate on message boards or email lists. Join these groups and participate in discussions when you have something relevant to add. This is free, but requires a time commitment and good communication skills.

10. Postcards. If you know exactly who your best prospects are and can obtain a low-cost list of them, postcards may be a great way to contact them. Invite them to visit your site and request your free bait piece.

11. Ezine Ads. If companies or individuals have an email newsletter or marketing list that reaches those you hope to sell to, buy ads there. Repeated ads work better than single-shot ones.

12. Your Own Blog. Start this only if you’re disciplined, enjoy writing and have a lot to say. Pay attention to the keywords in your blog post headlines, which gets you traffic through online search engines.

13. Content-Rich Web Site. Post resources, original articles, tools and other items people in your target market will search for, link to and recommend. This traffic-building method works slowly and gradually over time.

14. Radio Ads. It may sound crazy to advertise on the radio for Internet visitors, but I have one client who did this successfully. He ran repeated ads during commuting hours that invited listeners to download his free report, which had a very controversial title. He had carefully researched the audience of the radio station he chose and reached a group that was otherwise difficult to pinpoint.

15. Public Speaking. When you’re on the podium giving a talk to a local or industry group, you have great credibility. People who have seen or met you in person are more likely to remain on your list long-term. You can insert a list signup invitation on a handout for your talk, pass around a signup sheet or collect business cards from those who want to be on your list.

16. Networking. Use your business card as a signup tool when you hand it out at trade shows or conferences. This works best when you don’t simply list your web site on the card but specifically say something like, “Go to www.someplace <http://www.someplace>. com to receive a free whatever.”
Which of the methods above best fit your personal preferences and are easiest to implement? Get started today on the all-important task of building your list.

Since customer relationship management (CRM) connects to all aspects of an organization, purchasers must know the intricacies of their own businesses as well as the products and vendors available to them. That’s why we divided this guide in two parts: Know Yourself and Know Your Requirements.
I. Know Yourself
Buying CRM starts with the question, “Why do I need a CRM solution?” Many CRM projects fail because that question is never asked. With that in mind, here are four steps that will help you provide an answer and prepare your organization to evaluate CRM solutions.
Step 1. Look At Your Business
Develop a thorough understanding of how your business really works. Not how it should work or how you assume it works. Take this opportunity to map your business processes, their dependencies, and how changes to those processes can affect others. Begin with processes that aren’t working well. These will correlate with areas of your business that can be improved and help you identify
those that can be addressed with CRM. Process mapping will also reveal processes that work well. These processes may not need to be changed, but changes to other processes could affect them.
The evaluation that accompanies process mapping requires total honesty, which can bruise feelings. The objectivity of a third-party consultant can help minimize the dissension this might cause. A consultant can also reduce the internal resources needed to conduct process mapping.
At the end of the process mapping exercise, you should have a list of processes and activities that can be improved with CRM. The mapping exercise could show that your business isn’t ready for CRM or that the problems it faces can’t be solved by CRM. This is valuable information to have. Making the jump to CRM too early or for the wrong reasons will result in frustration and dissatisfaction.
Step 2. Pick The Right People For The Team
In addition to executive leadership and IT, enlist a group of front-line users to participate in the selection process — and listen to them. Not only will this ensure that you understand what users want and think is important, it will help accelerate adoption among their peers once a solution is chosen. Too often decisions are made about CRM applications without input from the people who will use them.
Step 3. Know The Regulatory Environment
It’s also important to take into account how information systems impact your ability to satisfy compliance requirements in your industry. Regulatory bodies vary in the restrictions and procedures they mandate for how data must be stored and managed. Solution delivery methods such as software as a service (SaaS) may not be appropriate in certain industries because they rely on a shared services model.
Step 4. Understand How The CRM Delivery Model Will Impact Your Budget
On-premise CRM software requires companies to own or lease the technology infrastructure — servers, storage, backup and recovery, and networking capabilities — and to provide the personnel who maintain it. There are also software license costs, maintenance fees, and integration expenses. Cloud-based SaaS software uses infrastructure provided by the CRM vendor, and while there may be integration costs, the software licensing expense is paid as a monthly subscription per user.
Certainly, smaller, cash-strapped companies often use the cloud. Likewise, larger companies with IT resources frequently use on-premise. But there are many exceptions to that general rule. More and more large companies employ cloud-based applications because they shift hardware requirements and the installation of patches and updates to the vendor. Conversely, smaller companies in fields where regulation makes the cloud problematic elect on-premise solutions.
Now You Have A Framework
The first four steps give you a framework to make a CRM selection that addresses your problems while creating a minimum of new ones. The framework includes:
* A list of processes and activities you need to improve
* A CRM decision-making team that includes users
* A knowledge of the regulatory constraints that may influence your decision
* An understanding of how the CRM delivery model will affect budgeting
II. Know Your Requirements
What is a good CRM solution? A solution that fits your business. Features are part of the equation, but more important are business considerations such as stakeholder interests, budget, support, integration, and industry demands. You also want a vendor that will work well with your organization over the long haul.
Step 5. Integration Requirements
Whether you plan to use CRM as a departmental solution or across your entire organization, integration can add significant cost and delay to a CRM implementation. So it’s wise to make ease of integration one of your preliminary criteria. Even if you have no immediate plans to integrate, a solution that’s too rudimentary or too complex to integrate with existing systems will almost certainly cause problems eventually — problems that will be expensive to fix.
Step 6. Support Requirements
No matter how adept your staff, they’ll need some degree of help with the CRM product you choose. Knowing their level of sophistication will help you determine how much, which is important since levels and costs of support vary from vendor to vendor.
Use your social network to find peers who have employed support from CRM vendors. They can be a source of unvarnished opinions about this important area. When you’re comparing vendors with similar capabilities, how they stack up in terms of support — cost and responsiveness — can be a deciding factor.
Step 7: Vertical Market Requirements
Are you in an industry that collects unique forms of customer data or in which customers negotiate a specific, non-standard path to buying? If so, there may be CRM solutions tailored to your industry. Purpose-built CRM applications have been created for insurance, real estate, agribusiness, non-profits, and others.
Companies such as resellers or distributors may need to manage tiers of customer relationships with direct customers, partners, and customers who buy from partners. These companies often buy CRM and find it ineffective. A related technology, partner relationship management (PRM), could be a better option for these businesses.
If your market does have unique demands, don’t forego a look at horizontally targeted CRM systems. They’re often more flexible than purpose-built solutions and, with the right customizations, may work better for your organization.
Step 8: Feature Requirements
Good CRM solutions have the same basic features. And features that are rarely used shouldn’t drive purchase decisions.
Feature selection is where the process mapping exercise proves especially valuable. In that exercise, you identified business problems you needed to solve or activities you wanted to improve. Look for features that map to those areas. For example, if you want to incorporate social media into your CRM strategy, look for a solution that can link with social networks to offer an expanded view of the customer relationship.
Listen to your front-line users on the selection team. Allow them to identify things that will make their jobs easier and use those ideas to guide decision-making about features.
Step 9: Financial Requirements
By now, you probably have several solutions in mind. It’s time to decide which of these is most affordable. As stated earlier, costs will vary depending on the delivery model. For example, on-premise software may carry an annual maintenance fee of 22 percent or more. Assess the full initial cost of your CRM candidates and their projected annual costs. Solutions that don’t fit your budget can be scratched from your shortlist.
Step 10: Vendor Requirements
When you think you’ve found the right CRM solution, examine that vendor’s track record — and do it independently. Vendors cherry pick their references so they may not reflect the majority of buyers’ experiences. Again, social media can be useful here. Ask whether a CRM implementation was genuinely transformative and, if so, what role the vendor played in that. You should also learn
something about a vendor’s financial stability. Once you’ve made your selection, you want to be sure the vendor will remain in business to support you in the future.
Getting It Right
The road to buying a CRM solution contains multiple decision points where your business requirements intersect with what the market offers. Take the time to make informed decisions. Even if your company decides against implementing a CRM solution, the evaluation process can improve efficiency and be the catalyst for a more customer-centric approach to business.
