Publishing With Smashwords

Smashwords is a platform for e-book publishing and distribution. As the world’s largest indie distribution network, it offers its titles in various formats so e-books can be read using any device.
Smashwords not only publishes your work on its site and its micro-sites, it also lists the title with Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Apple’s iPad Store — the three main sites from which people buy their e-books.
Why Use Smashwords?
Smashwords is great because it’s the cheapest way to get your title in front of the most people. The publishing process is relatively user-friendly and the time to market is incredibly fast. It takes minutes to publish with Smashwords.
When you become a Smashwords author, you are given your own profile page that you can connect to your website, blog and social media sites. It also shows up in Web searches, so if you keyword optimize your page and make the content interesting, you can get some exposure there.
One of the things that makes the site unique is you have total control over the final product. Absolutely everything is up to you. You can even update your e-books if you find a typo or simply wish to reword a sentence.
Our Smashwords Experience
We launched on Smashwords a few weeks ago. It takes some time to feature on their premium list — a list you really need to be on. The key to appearing on the list is proper formatting. Following the Smashwords’ style sheet details is a must as is having a flat cover image — those two items held up our acceptance to the site.
Find someone who knows how to format properly — Smashwords will supply a list of recommended people. It’s not expensive and using the service saves a load of time and potential grief.

How to Be Published

Although I said it was relatively easy to publish with Smashwords, the truth is, there are other self-publishing platforms that make it much easier.
Smashwords has an eight-step publishing process that’s a little bit complicated at first, so I suggest downloading and reading the guide the site offers its new members. It will teach you some good tips and techniques.
When formatting, I suggest you choose the nuclear method. This means copying your book into Notepad and then copying it back into the original file to get rid of funny coding.
Promoting Your Book
Smashwords does a lot of your promotion for you. Your book will be listed with the retailers mentioned above and your book’s page on Smashwords and its micro-sites appears in search engine results.
One thing that is truly unique about Smashwords: you can issue promotional coupons. You can use coupon codes to offer a discount on your book. For example, you could post the coupon code for your book on Facebook for your fans or list members. This is much better than lowering the price, because you can use it as an offer for your fans.
Smashwords also allows you to show your potential readers a sample of your book. This option is great because people are much more likely to make a purchase if they’ve read a few pages and enjoyed it.
Another feature that sets Smashwords apart is the many different formats it publishes in. It automatically transfers your file into nine different formats so anybody, anywhere and with any device can read it.
Smashwords offers a variety of options for publishing and promotion. It’s a great tool for selling your e-books and getting your name out there as an expert author in your niche.

100 Incredible iPhone Apps for Modern Mobile Learning

Even Luddites have to admit the iPhone definitely altered the way humanity interacts with its own devices, making Douglas Adams’ cheeky The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (the eponymous book itself, not the whole Earth being demolished to build an interstellar highway thing) leap from science fiction to science fact. Because of so much power packed into a sleek handheld, this means some pretty amazing educational implications for gadget enthusiasts. As a result, some innovative developers out there provide hundreds of hours of engaging content meant to get anyone of any age up and learning about the world.

Apps to Make Your Social Media Efforts Easier

I do a great deal of article writing, blogging and social media posting of content for myself and for clients. To distribute an article or post through the maze of social media networks and article publishing services can take a great deal of time. Therefore, it’s important to utilize the right social media tools that will get the job done in the best manner.
In addition to the publication of posts and blogs, to track what the results are from your efforts is important, especially if you’re reporting back to a client.
After trying out quite a few, I’ve compiled my favorite social media tools and applications, listed below, that help make my social media life simpler and more effective.
When deciding what tools would work best for your needs, the things to consider are:
* Simplicity of use
* Ability to Schedule
* Format of end distribution (what will the link/post look like when published?)
* Good API (application programming interface, which allows communication between different Web applications)
* Cost (free is great, but depending on what your or your company’s needs are, it may well be worth it to pay to upgrade services)

Hootsuite
It’s one of the best social media managing tools around to monitor your social sites, including RSS feeds, from one page. Hootsuite offers plenty of tutorials and help to get started. If you have a small business, and only a few social pages, then the free version will work well. You get up to five social profiles, two feeds and you can schedule your posts. Hootsuite integrates with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and more. Connect YouTube and upload videos directly from Hootsuite, as well as respond to comments. You can post photos, links and messages directly to your streams. If you upgrade to Pro at $9.99 per month, you can have unlimited social profiles, do bulk scheduling of posts, and assign more than one user to manage your accounts. With the Pro version you also get several free analytic reports, which can get expensive if you’re paying per report with the free version.

Raven
Raven tools offers all that Hootsuite does. You can stream Facebook, Twitter and YouTube from one page, but the streams are mixed together, making it difficult to sort, read and respond. You can post directly to one or all streams, and schedule them. One downside about the posting from Raven is you cannot post original or large-sized photos, only thumbnails from links.
The best part about Raven is its research and analytical tools. Link your blog, and use its manager to write custom posts focusing on specific keywords that you choose. The manager will analyze your content keywords for density, frequency and relevance, as well as the readability for average age and grade level. In addition, with it SEO tools, utilizing data from SEMRush, SEOmoz and Majestic SEO, you can do deep research on detailed keywords, competitors, links and social intelligence from any domain.
Another plus to Raven is that it provides an awesome custom reporting platform, with which you can create custom, white labeled reports pulling statistics from Facebook Insights, Twitter, Google Analytics, saved keyword searches, SERPs, and a great deal more.
With the Pro plan at $99, you can have up to four users, unlimited Facebook and Twitter accounts, 20 social monitor searches, 1,000 keyword rankings, and a whole lot of link management. If creating reports and SEO research is important, Raven is the best bet. You can try it out free for 90 days. There is no free version.

ifttt
If This Then That (hence its acronym, ifttt) is one of the handiest free social managing tools that enables you to link multiple social media sources and blast your content across the Web all from one post. The concept is based on “recipes” that users create to link their accounts. If you post to your blog, then a post goes out to your Facebook Fan page. You can then set up concurrent recipes–Facebook to Twitter, Facebook to Blogger etc. Mix and match your recipes from nearly 50 social channels to your needs. And it’s completely free! ifttt

Ezine Articles WordPress Plug-In
If you’re utilizing Ezine already, this plugin will make your blog publishing life much easier. After you install, simply write your blog, and, following Ezine’s publishing rules, press submit and the article automatically goes to your Ezine account for review and approval.

8 Apps for Writer

If you’re tired of your Moleskine and think that Microsoft Word is for laughable tech dinosaurs, consider going mobile with your writing. With non-verbal communication becoming the norm in today’s fast-paced, tech-forward world, there are many new tools designed to help you get the most out of your writing time, and, indeed, your words. If you’re struck with inspiration when you’re on the go, at least one of these eight essential apps should be available at your fingertips. Beware, wannabe writers! Once you’ve downloaded any or all of these tools, you’ll have less of an excuse to say that you “just can’t find the time” to write. For professionals and amateurs alike, these eight mobile-friendly writing apps are great assets to your toolkit.

Clean Writer
With all the clutter and noise out there keeping you from doing your best writing, there exists an app that silences all red underlines and dings until the time is write um, right. Boasting a “clean” user interface, “intuitive workflow,” and hidden editing options that only show up when you’re ready, Clean Writer is good for both beginning and advanced mobile writers. If you’ve got ideas to map and brainstorming to do, Clean Writer is an easy and functional tool for keeping yourself both organized and optimized.

Pages
It’s an industry standard, and there’s no question why. If you already use the word-processing application on your desktop Mac, you’ll be ready to go mobile with Pages in no time. The no-frills word processor allows for distraction free writing, and has cross-platform functionality that makes it truly a writer’s greatest tool.

Story Tracker
Story Tracker is an app that keeps track of your story submissions and pitches, and it’s a great tool for professionals and amateurs alike. Available in both paid and free versions, the creator of the app is intimately involved in transparently tracking sales, usage, and responding to feedback with important functionality updates. With the exception of guaranteeing that you’ll soon see your name in lights (or, in print, as it were), there’s not much you can’t do (or find help with) if you’re using Story Tracker.

Advanced English Dictionary and Thesaurus
Developed by the Cognitive Science Laboratory at Princeton, the Advanced English Dictionary and Thesaurus is a truly useful little app with a long name. Search for synonyms to break up writing monotony and improve your working vocabulary, and have a go at defining one of almost 150,000 included English words. Bust writer’s block and the diction doldrums by utilizing this invaluable, free tool of the trade, and do so from anywhere that your writing (or your life) might take you.

B-Rhymes
Who says all writers have to go pro(se)? For the nascent poet (or rapper) in you, get your hands on the free B-Rhymes rhyming dictionary app. B-Rhymes rocks because it doesn’t stick to a strict script — the app chooses words that “almost” rhyme with entries, providing you more creative freedom when you’ve got syllabic sounds to work around.

ScriptWrite
You could be the first award-winning screenwriter to pen a piece from your phone. Download ScriptWrite for $3.99, and easily write and format scripts by industry standards. The visual interface that tops the touch-screen keyboard makes it easy to include stage direction and dialog, and you don’t have to spend hours at a typewriter to get the right spacing effect. Budget-conscious customers (read: starving artists) prefer ScriptWrite to the insanely popular First Draft, as its software updates are free (and there’s a great mobile interface), unlike its big-timin’ predecessor.

Grammar App HD
If you need a refresher course on your grammar rules (you probably do), the internal tests in this $0.99 app can help you back to tip-top shape in no time. If you can’t pen your projects while using proper grammar, it’s likely that you’ll never find meaningful work as a writer. Journalists, grad students, and casual writers alike boast satisfaction with this highly interactive product, and it’s likely that even the most stringent grammarians still have a little something to learn.

iA Writer
iA Writer for iPad is brought to you by the lovely folks at Information Architects, and they’ve truly created the most beautiful writing app out there. While you can download a version of this for your mobile device, the true value of iA Writer is best viewed on an iPad. Another application known for distraction-free writing, the touch-screen tools (such as Focus Mode and One Tap Renaming) are truly where the difference in well-designed functionality lies.

Free Applications for touchpad tablet

Here are some free Apps for touchpad
  1. HP App Catalog
The HP App Catalog, like other mobile app stores, lets you look at the most recent or most popular apps, as well as search by category.
  1. TouchPad App List
To find TouchPad apps in the App Catalog, look for the little gray words "For TouchPad" next to the name of each app. The last two apps in the list here don't have 'em; those are Palm Pre apps that can run on the TouchPad, but in a smaller window. You can’t scale them up to full size, like you can do with the iPad’s 2x button.
  2. Angry Birds HD (Free)

In 2011, Angry Birds is the sign that your mobile platform has made it. Angry Birds HD for the TouchPad is smooth, free, and plays in full screen. If you become a real addict, though, you'll have to shell out $1.99 for Angry Birds Rio HD.
  3. Facebook (Free)

The TouchPad is only the second tablet with a dedicated Facebook app. And HP's app implementation is impressive, with several unique features, including this Flipboard-like full screen view of your news feed. A two-pane interface lets you flip easily between your news feed, messages, events, places, friends and photos, and the places where your friends checked in show up on a map.
  4. Amazon Kindle (Free)

What's a tablet without a Kindle app? There isn't much to the TouchPad's version yet, but it syncs with your existing Kindle library and lets you search for text, mark pages, and check your notes. There's also a link to the Web-based Kindle store, but when I checked it before launch, it wasn't working.
  5. Spaz HD Beta Preview 1 (Free)

Spaz was my favorite Twitter client on the Pre 2, and it's back on the TouchPad with a vastly expanded feature set. You can skim through multiple search columns, log in as multiple Twitter accounts, use different image hosting and URL shortcut services and, of course, Tweet. It's all the Twitter you'd want on this tablet.
  6. TuneIn Radio (Free)
Without Pandora, Slacker or Last.fm around, this is the best streaming music app for the TouchPad so far. TuneIn automatically gathers all of the streams for radio stations in your city, arranging them along a virtual AM/FM spectrum; if you want to go farther afield, you can browse a global directory of streams by topic.
  7. Typewriter Beta (Free)
An ingenious, and good-looking text processor for the TouchPad, Typewriter uses e-mail-like formatting conventions (for instance, “_italic_” and “[hotlink]” to create elegant documents. You can save your files to Dropbox, email them, or just save them on the TouchPad to transfer over later via USB. I'd like to see more features, such as spell check and find-and-replace, but this is a good start.
  8. Spaz HD Beta Preview 1 (Free)

So far the only weather app designed especially for the TouchPad, WeatherBug opens up with a virtual window showing you a recent picture of your location, which is pretty neat. Beyond that, you get forecasts, wind speed and direction, and radar images. Oddly, it throws traffic in there, too. WeatherBug uses the TouchPad's real estate well, but it's missing some of the more in-depth scenarios and advice you find on major weather sites, like recommendations on what to wear, allergy reports, or whether the weather is suitable for various activities.

The Best iPhone/iPad Apps for Exporting and Importing Your Photos

With so many wireless iOS networking apps for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch available, there’s very little reason to connect any of these devices to iTunes, except to update the software. Besides, importing and exporting photos using iTunes has never been one of the best features of Apple‘s mobile device process. Let me introduce you to 5 useful apps for importing and exporting photos to and from your iOS device(s).

1. DropBox

First off, if you’re an iOS device user, you should definitely have a file sharing DropBox account and app. Dropbox is one of the best ways to sync files between computers and mobile devices, because all your files can be accessed, over Wi-Fi and 3g, via your online account. The latest version of DropBox now allows bulk upload of photos and videos to your account. With the Dropbox installed on your Mac, it’s really easy to drop image content into a folder and then download it onto your iOS device, and vise versa. Another benefit of having Dropbox is that you can connect to your account from within many of the leading wireless file sharing apps, such as they ones I’m describing in this article.

2. PhotoSync

What I like best about PhotoSync is that it allows you to selectively choose photos and movie files that you want to sync between your iPhone and iPad, and any computers on your Wi-Fi network, or with a BlueTooth connection. You can even directly import photos from your iOS into your iPhoto and Aperture libraries. PhotoSync also includes a free Mac client for exporting images from your computer to your iOS device(s). And like many photo syncing devices, you can use PhotoSync to transfer files to your Dropbox and Flickr account.

3. RemoteSnap

RemoteSnap almost instantly transfers your images directly to your Mac or PC over Wi-Fi—as you snap them on your iPhone, or select existing images from your iPhone Camera or Photo Library. To use RemoteSnap, you will need to download app to your iOS device, and then install the free “RemoteSnap Server” client on your Mac or PC. The setup is very easy. With RemoteSnap’s instant transfer feature, you could set up a Hazel automation to automatically open and display images as they are sent via RemoteSnap, which means others can view your images as you take them.

4. PicBox

If you would rather not waste time selecting photos in your iPhone Camera Roll to upload to Dropbox, download a free copy of Picbox, which automatically copies entire Camera Roll of photos and/or videos to your Dropbox account with one single tap. On top of that, Picbox keeps track of which images it has already uploaded to your account. It does not erase your original images on your Camera Roll, it simply copies them to your account.

5. CameraSync

As you may have noticed, each of the apps I have described do basically the same thing, but in a slightly different way. But for a completely hassle-free uploading of pictures and video from your Camera Roll to your Dropbox, iDisk, FTP server, Amazon S3 bucket, Flickr or Box.net account—CameraSync will automatically begin the upload process right after you open the app. CameraSync can do all the uploading in the background, which means you can switch away from the app and do other things on your iPhone. CameraSync will also keep track of which images and videos it has already uploaded.
Yes, CameraSync and PicBox are nearly the same, the only difference is how fast you want the upload process to begin.
Well, the above are my picks for the top photo syncing apps. Let me know which ones you prefer.

Best Software Application for Blackberry

AP Mobile News
The Associated Press; bb.apnews.com
Just like its brethren on other mobile platforms, this news program gives you complete, flexible access to local, national and international news. On top of giving you up-to-the-minute news, the latest version of this app lets you send stories to Facebook or your friends, read stories off-line, or watch news videos. If you're looking for multiple news sources, try Viigo below, but AP can satisfy any needy news junkie. Download AP Mobile News from the Web site above.

BBNotePad
Qin;
BBNotePad is a big step up from the built-in BlackBerry notepad. It features three different font sizes, allows you to save a file as .txt so you can open it directly on your computer, and lets you send memos or notes using Bluetooth to other handheld devices. Download BBNotePad by using the link above.

Bloomberg Mobile

Bloomberg LP; m.bloomberg.com
BlackBerries have a lot of hard-core, costly options for serious stock gurus, but Bloomberg is the best free business app. It provides news, stock quotes, company descriptions, a customized list of stocks, and market trends. It's also pretty easy to use, considering the amount of data it's throwing at you. Bloomberg Mobile is available from BlackBerry App World.

 BOLT
Bitstream; www.boltbrowser.com
The built-in BlackBerry browser is a mess. To the rescue rides BOLT, a fast, high-quality browser that downloads pages which actually look like desktop Web pages. BOLT comes with all the browser usuals, such as bookmarks and an RSS reader, but its most important attribute is desktop fidelity - pages look really good in this browser, even including some Flash content. It's a huge step up from the BlackBerry browser. To download BOLT, go to www.boltbrowser.com.

Facebook

Research in Motion; www.blackberry.com
The latest Facebook app transforms your BlackBerry into a miniature version of the Facebook desktop site, sans add-in apps. The Highlights feature works like your news feed, letting you view recent status updates, photo uploads, comments, and wall posts without having to dive into the app's various menu icons. You can upload or tag photos, check out photos, and add comments to photos or news items. This is a strong, successful transformation of Facebook into a useful mobile app. Facebook is available in BlackBerry App World.

FlashLight 1.0.2

App Pro Shop; No Web site
There are many free flashlight apps to pick from, but we choose FlashLight by App Pro Shop. It's extremely easy to use, and the light is bright. You can adjust both the color and brightness of the light to your taste, too; according to the manufacturer, different colors of light work better in different situations. Green, for instance, won't spook the fish. FlashLight is available from BlackBerry App World.

Gmail

Google; m.google.com/a/
Hey, wait a minute - why do you need to run an app to get e-mail on a BlackBerry? Because you get many more features that way. Reading Gmail through the built-in BlackBerry client is a pretty basic experience. Loading the Gmail app, you get access to your contact list, sent and archived mail, labels and stars. It looks like Gmail, too. You can download the Gmail app from the Web site above. If you're looking for a better Gmail experience within the existing BlackBerry email app, try RIM's relatively-new Gmail plug-in, downloadable at http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices/features/communication/gmail.jsp?.

Google Maps

Google; m.google.com/maps
It's GPS navigation for free; what's not to love? Google's BlackBerry app offers driving, transit and walking directions (albeit without voice prompts) for businesses and street addresses, with real-time traffic updates that help you steer around congested areas. The new Layers feature lets you view various kinds of information - for instance, Wikipedia entries - overlaid on a map, while Latitude tells you where your friends are. If you ever leave the house, this app is a must-have. Go to the Web address above to get Google Maps.

Ka-Glom
Magmic; www.magmic.com
It's hard to find a good free game for BlackBerries that works on the latest devices. This puzzle game is the best of the bunch. It's a bit of a Tetris clone, but with the bonus of exploding chain reactions between different kinds of falling blocks- and who doesn't like exploding chain reactions? If you're sick of BrickBreaker and Word Mole, this is another quick, colorful, casual game that will give you something immersive and different. Ka-Glom is available from BlackBerry App World.

Opera Mini
Opera Software; mini.opera.com
Where BOLT (see above) focuses on fidelity, Opera Mini goes for speed. Especially good on lower-resolution BlackBerries like the Curve, Opera Mini compresses pages so they transfer more quickly, and reformats them so they're readable on small screens without zooming in and out. If you want to, you can also look at a desktop view of the page. The latest version, 5.0, adds tabs and a graphical bookmarks page. Download Opera Mini from the Web site above.
