Samsung Galaxy Tablets Get Android Jelly Bean Upgrade

Two of Samsung's best-selling tablets, the Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 2, are finally getting the latest version of Google's Android 4.1 operating system, the so-called Jelly Bean version.
But Samsung has made it worth waiting for with the addition of Premium Suite, which the company says includes "dramatic improvements" to the tablet's multitasking features, as well as improvement to the S Pen stylus included with each device.

On the multitasking side, Samsung has now added several features that leverage the Galaxy Note 10.1's Multi Window view that lets you run two apps side-by-side.

The new Cascade View feature lets users freely resize, move and pin selected applications in multiple views, running them simultaneously or while operating the home screen.
Air View lets lets users easily preview content such as video, email attachments and photos without having to open the related apps.

And a new Quick Command lets users create customized and use preset shortcuts for the S Pen, using designated S Pen strokes, to launch apps and services.

Other new features include enhancements to the Galaxy's handwriting software that now lets you send handwritten notes via email as well as hand-write directly in the software's S Planner. So you could, for example, circle the date of an important upcoming appointment and write directly on the S Planner calendar (in monthly view only), just as you would on a paper version.

Samsung has also added templates for S Note designed to let users add effects to their digital content with Idea Sketch and also insert video directly into not only Note templates but also other templates.

The update, courtesy of Samsung’s Android 4.1 Premium Suite, has several benefits aside from the Jelly Bean update, the company says.

A multi-window feature enables users to view and perform multiple tasks on the same screen without transitions and a popup note allows users to write down information while on a call.

Photo note and photo frame allows users to write notes on the front or back of their photos, while easy clip lets users crop text or an image from any screen “to save or share easily.”
Paper artist allows the user to choose from various picture-editing effects, while the suite’s S planner gives users the ability to send handwritten notes to themselves. The enhanced S note enables users to create notebooks with images, videos and templates.

“Use sketch effect for various photo effect and image filters with color picker, you can pick any color you want directly from any images and draw with it,” the website reads.
Meanwhile, the Korea Times is reporting Samsung anticipates shipping 510 million cellphones in 2013 — a 20 percent hike over this year.

An executive from one of Samsung’s major suppliers told the Korea Times “of the 510 million handsets it plans to sell, 390 million are slated as Smartphones and 120 million, feature and budget phones.”
Also, Samsung announced Dec. 27 it has sold more than 10 million Galaxy devices in India since debuting the Galaxy S in the country in June 2010.

Although Samsung did not reveal the individual success of it devices, the company did say the Galaxy Y series, Note series and SIII together contributed more than 50 per cent of the sales.

Yahoo, Samsung Partner to Offer Interactive TV

Yahoo and Samsung have announced an expanded multi-year partnership to integrate its broadcast interactivity service into the company’s Smart TVs.
Broadcast interactivity is Internet-enhanced television with a twist.
Under the arrangement, Yahoo’s SoundPrint audio fingerprint technology will unite with Samsung’s SyncPlus platform. The combination will result in real-time content in conjunction with TV shows and advertisements on Samsung TVs.
“Today, consumers are engaging in interactive TV program experiences more and more,” Eric Anderson, vice-president of content and product solutions at Samsung Electronics America said in a press release.
“Samsung’s SyncPlus service combined with Yahoo! Broadcast Interactivity and SoundPrint will provide consumers with a very entertaining experience. We are very pleased to partner with Yahoo! and we look forward to a successful collaboration in the years to come.”
Yahoo’s interactive television programming could come in the form of trivia, additional show insights, program statistics and gaming options. Showtime Networks and National Geographic Channel are two of the initial TV programming partners to offer trivia.

For example, Showtime Boxing fans could access in-depth fight information such as photos and videos. They could also test their knowledge of boxers or vote for the boxer they think will win the match.

The system also gives users the option of using their Smartphones or tablets as a stand-in for their remote control to view or share bonus content. Users can also receive on-screen prompts about other viewing options.

The Yahoo-Samsung partnership will also foster new forms of advertising by extending traditional 30-second commercials into “immediate actions.”
Broadcast interactivity-enabled commercials, will allow advertisers to embed calls-to-action for downloading apps or digital media, providing coupons, ordering samples, reading reviews or viewing product information.

“We are thrilled that our expanded partnership with Samsung extends our platform’s footprint, enabling our content partners and advertisers to reach many more consumers,” said Ron Jacoby, vice-president of Connected TV at Yahoo!. “Content owners can augment their programming, and advertisers can create compelling calls-to-action that allow audiences to engage on marketing messages the moment they are delivered.”
