Younity, a new app courtesy of software startup Entangled Media, is taking on Apple’s iCloud.
The app allows iPhone and iPad users to access their data from any
device just like iCloud does but Younity offers this access without
syncing or storing files in the cloud. And, because files are not stored
in the cloud, the company cannot access your data or your devices. The
app also enables devices, be they mobile or desktop, to access data or
stream videos or music.
“Our design philosophy is structured around user behavior and
unlocking the potential we all see in the technology and content around
us,” the website reads. “That is, the potential for it to exist simultaneously everywhere for us to access easily and on-demand.
“Our core technology is designed to be a ubiquitous data platform
that enables data to exist in multiple places, either physically or
virtually, simultaneously, hence our company name is derived from the
concept of quantum entanglement.”
Once Younity is installed on all of your devices and you are logged
in to the account you created, you can instantly access all of the files
catalogued by Younity as long as the devices are turned on and are
connected to the Internet. The app does not make copies of the data on
your devices, saving storage capacity. Also, the data does not have to
be uploaded into a specific folder to be accessed.
Your devices do not all need to be Apple products either. The app
works with both Windows and Mac operating systems including Windows XP,
Vista, 7 and 8 and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8.
This enables you to access a video or a song from a Windows desktop
and play it on an iPad because Younity was designed to convert the
files.
Younity also allows you to stream music and videos to Apple-TV or any TV or stereo equipped with AirPlay.
